HEAT's
ON Project
2004
marked the 14th consecutive year that the Greater Michigan PMC/MSCA
and UA 190 - Plumbers / Pipefitters / Service Technicians have
provided services to the public through the HEAT's ON Project
(Handicapped and Elderly Assistance to Our Neighbors). Over
100 volunteers from the PMC, UA 190 and local contractors and
students worked to insure the welfare of citizens in both Washtenaw
and Livingston Counties.
As
in the past, the morning began with a breakfast for all participants
where they received their assignments for the day. The breakfast
gives new volunteers the opportunity to learn from the "Old
Timers" what the day should hold, and how to deal, the
most effectively with the participants.

During
the day, more than 60 homes were visited with furnaces cleaned,
repaired and made ready for the upcoming heating season. As
in every past year, there was the necessity to shut down and
replace a homeowner's furnace.
Volunteers
also distributed smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors
and batteries to all the homes and installed them where necessary.
The program was held in co-operation with Livingston and Washtenaw
County's Family Independence Agencies and Neighborhood Senior
Services.

Fifty
Eight years ago, in the year 1946, the city of Ann Arbor and
it's surrounding area were about one third of it's present
size.... The group of men in this picture are survivors of
the original twenty four that comprised the first ever, Federally
sanctioned plumbing apprentice class surrounding the City
of Ann Arbor and vicinity....
Several
of these men, became the leading owners of the principal Plumbing
and Heating Shops that survive today , while others of this
group replaced out of town foremen and supervisors that came
to this area to run the work of the Plumbing and Piping industry
for all of the buildings that were constructed during their
time....This was the beginning, and it follows today, that
many supervisors for the current Plumbing and Piping industry
comes from ranks of of Local 190 and It's associated Contractors
here in Ann Arbor.
Retirees and members of UA 190 were honored at a recent Award
and Retiree Ceremony for all members of the Local. Special
recognition was given to the first Apprenticeship Class of
the UA 190. Of the original twenty-three members of the class,
twelve are pictured above.
Of
those pictured -- Neil Bucholtz, became 190's Training Coordinator
and was instrumental in it's move to Washtenaw Community College.
Lloyd
Zill and Bill Romelhardt went into business together and then
became partners at Hutzel Plumbing & Heating, Michigan's
oldest plumbing company, with Gene Cummins, whose children
now own the company, Louie Boone partnered with Robert Darr
forming Boone & Darr, Inc. one of our largest contractors,
still going strong 55 years later (still owned by Robert Darr,
Louie Boone retired in the 80's).
Not
pictured, William Bush, who passed away in the early 70's.

of the Michigan State Plumbing Division.
